Most systems allow for a length of the capillary tube from the filter to be fixed on the outside (or inside on some machines) of the return from the evaporator. This is done to improve the efficiency of the sealed system and keeps the return tube from forming condensation because it is colder than the surrounding air.
The automatic defrost operation is done simply by warming the evaporator area by means of a small heater unit. This melts the build-up of ice particles which run off the base of the unit into a catchment channel. The channel is designed to funnel the liquid through a small hole in the rear of the appliance on to a dished area on top of the compressor unit. The heat generated by thenormal operation of the compressor/motor unit causes the small but regular amount of water to evaporate into the atmosphere. The switching of the heater unit is linked to the thermostat operation, working in opposition to the cooling sequence.
The small hole from the collection channel to the exterior dish mounted on the compressor/motor unit can easily block, causing water to accumulate in the base of the refrigerator. This may mislead you into thinking the appliance has a serious fault. Periodically check that the vent hole and channels are free from debris. This hole can be cleared with a pipe cleaner or similar flexible object.
The temperature in refrigerators and freezers is governed by a simple thermostat arrangement. Variable capillary thermostats are used by nearly all manufacturers and replacement units are generally available. When replacing a thermostat, make sure you buy one identical to the original. It is advisable to fit the new unit on a one-to-one basis. As with all repairs, ensure the appliance is isolated (switch off, plug out) before checks or repairs arecarried out..
This system does not produce an ice build-up during the refrigeration or freezing process. Cooling is by compression and expansion with the addition of a motorized fan which circulates the air throughout the compartments to give a more even distribution of coldair. The system includes a means of dehumidifying the air (it condenses on the coldest part of the system and then is drained away to evaporate outside the loadcompartment). This is a simple operation that works extremely well.
Any likely mechanical and electrical problems will be much the same as with conventional appliances with the addition of possible faults with the circulation fan and motor.
Although faults associated with excess frost build-up are eliminated with this system, the running cost and the initial purchase price are higher.
The following list the faults most likely to occur in both refrigerators and freezers. Seven general symptoms are given with their possible causes listed in descending, order according to how likely they are. Next to the causes are notes on the course of action you should take to avoid the faults or rectify them once they have occurred.
Regular checks and simple maintenance of equipment will make you more aware of the operation and workings of your particular appliance. This, in turn, will help greatly in diagnosing and isolating any faults that occur. Remember safety is paramount and in no circumstances should it be compromised. Always double-check that the appliance is unplugged. Keep the plug in view so that no-one else can plug it in without your knowing.
Do not jump to instant conclusions and start work in a haphazard way. Sit down calmly and start to work out what the problem may be and form the plan of attack in a logical and concise manner.
