Cookers
Always switch off the control before cleaning a cooker even if it is not being mantled.
Do not let metal cooking foil come o contact with spiral type elements. Take care if the cooker is mounted on eels and likely to be interfered with by youngsters.
Never leave fat in a pan unattended on hotplate and take care with the position handles of vessels containing boiling liquid in the presence of children.
Do not attempt to remove pieces of broken toast from a toaster using a knife other metal object. Pull out the plug tore releasing the obstruction.
Kettles
Do not stand a switched-on electric kettle the cooker where the flex is likely to drape over a hotplate.
Always switch off at the socket when filing the kettle and do not leave the flex plugged in with the exposed kettle connector removed from the kettle and lying the work top or table.
Do not leave a non-automatic kettle switched on when answering a call at the door or the telephone or when ‘popping upstairs for a second’.
If you replace a slow standard element by a high-speed element, wait until the kettle boils before leaving the kitchen as you may under-estimate the speed of boiling. All kettles have thermal cutouts, but if yours fails to operate, a serious fire could result if unattended.
Electric Blankets
Buy only a blanket having the British Standard Kitemark. It is now an offence for anyone in Britain to sell a blanket not bearing this symbol.
Follow the makers instructions on fitting and using a new blanket and have every blanket inspected by the makers every three years at least.
Get rid of old blankets and cut off the flex so they are unable to be used again.
Never switch on a mains voltage under- blanket when the bed is occupied. An over- blanket may be switched on when the bed is occupied but it must not be used as an under blanket.
Repairs to Appliances
Always pull out the plug before repairing or making adjustments to any electrical appliance and where there is no socket outlet, switch off at the mains. Do not attempt any repairs beyond your capabilities and then only in conjunction with makers servicing instructions for other than simple appliances.
Periodically check the cover securing screw of each plug; if the cover comes off as you pull out the plug (or inserted it) you are likely to touch the live terminals.
