Do not fit a high wattage bulb into a shade or fitting designed for bulbs of lower ratings. Some shades give the maximum wattage but if there is no indication, restrict the wattage to 60 W or preferably 40 W. Otherwise overheating may occur and the shade material either melt or ignite. Damage can also be done to the fixed wiring by transference of heat through the lamp- holders; this is particularly the case if it is a close ceiling fitting. Damage can also be done to the flex, if pendant and the flex is not of the heat-resisting type.
Take particular care when replacing a bulb in a wall light if the light is not independently switched. If the light has only an integral cord switch or a press button switch, there is usually no means of knowing whether the switch is ON or OFF when the bulb has failed.
Do not leave lampholders empty for this represents a shock risk. If you have no spare bulb, leave the old bulb in the lampholder.
Do not add flex extensions to a ceiling rose designed for only one flexible cord.
Do not use twin lampholder adaptors for running an appliance from the light. Apart from putting undue strain on the pendant flex the appliance is likely to overload the lighting circuit.
Electric Heaters
Scorching and fire are the principal hazards associated with electric heaters, particularly radiant heaters and all portable electric heaters.
The first rule of safety is to ensure that a radiant heater is fitted with a correct dress guard. Modern heaters are fitted with the approved guard to prevent a person poking a finger through the mesh as well as to prevent fabrics falling on or brushing the elements and catching fire. Radiant heaters not fitted with approved pattern dress guards should be scrapped.
Periodically check that the fixtures securing the guard have not loosened and that none of the wires of the mesh are broken or have become distorted.
Never stand a portable radiant heater, when switched off, against furniture or fabric or place it facing a wall even when the plug is out of the socket. There is always a risk of someone inserting the plug by mistake and causing scorching and possibly a fire.
Replace a broken element without delay for, not only may stray ends or parts of the rod touch the reflector, but a child may insert a metal object or be able to touch the broken end with a finger and receive a fatal shock.
Do not use a radiant fire with an element missing because the live contacts become a potential hazard when the switch is on without the hot element acting as a warning.
Replace a ‘dud’ lamp of a fuel effect fire as soon as it fails for this also serves as the necessary pilot light and a warning that the flex is live when the plug is in the socket.
Do not attempt to replace an element or remove a dress guard of a fixed heater without first turning off the main switch if the heater is not supplied from a plug and socket enabling the plug to be withdrawn.
Never place clothing or other materials or to dry over the grille of a convector heater, fan heater or storage heater.
Do not let fabrics fall on to tubular and skirting heaters for this would cause a build of temperature result in scorching and possibly a fire. Also do not let curtains come o contact with this type of heater.
Take particular care in the choice and positioning of heaters in a nursery. Babies likely to throw clothes on to a free standing convector and can be burned by liant fires even when these mounted on wall at high level but easily reached ,m a displaced cot.
