Specific failure symptoms include: 1) When the dishwasher is turned ON, nothing happens. 2) When the dishwasher is turned ON a “buzzing” sound is heard.
To find the cause of this problem, first check to be sure the electricity is turned ON at the circuit breaker panel. Next, check to see that the dishwasher timer knob is pushed in or pulled out to the ON position when selecting a cycle.
A check should be made with the volt/ohmmeter to check if voltage is available to the dishwasher wiring. A voltage check is made by setting the volt/ohmmeter on the 150 A/C scale and placing one probe of the volt/ohmmeter on one wire that supplies voltage to the dishwasher. Place the other probe on the remaining wire. The meter should read 110-125 volts. This would indicate that electrical power was available from the circuit breaker panel to the dishwasher terminal box.
If the above check showed no voltage at the dishwasher terminal box electrical wires, the problem could be a defective circuit breaker or fuse, house wiring burned or broken from circuit breaker panel to terminal box. If a defective circuit breaker or fuse is suspected, it would be recommended that a qualified electrician perform these repairs. Refer to “Dishwasher Stops In Cycle” in this chapter for procedure to check a defective circuit breaker or fuse.
Turn the electricity OFF at the circuit breaker or fuse panel before servicing the dishwasher. To check for broken or burned wires, refer to “Dishwasher Does Not Fill With Water” section of this chapter.
Turn electricity OFF at the circuit breaker panel. Refer to the “Repair Procedures” in this chapter for removal of the selector switch.
Check to see that selector switch (push button) is not in the half-way position. In this position, it is possible the dishwasher will not start when making a cycle selection. Fully depress the button when selecting a cycle.
To check the selector switch, set the volt/ohmmeter on the RX-1 scale. Connect one probe from the volt/ohmmeter to one terminal of the selector switch. Attach the remaining probe to another terminal of the switch. Check for continuity by depressing the button of the selector switch. The volt/ohmmeter should show full scale deflection or 0 ohms. This check would indicate this terminal of the switch is not defective. If you get NO continuity, the switch is defective — replace it. NOTE: A selector switch (push button) contains several terminals. Check each terminal connector with the volt/ohmmeter. Each terminal should show continuity when the switch button is depressed. If one of these checks shows NO continuity, the switch is defective — replace it.
Turn the electricity OFF at the circuit breaker or fuse panel before servicing the dishwasher. To check the door switch, refer to “Dishwasher Does Not Fill With Water” section of this chapter.
Turn the electricity OFF at the circuit breaker panel before servicing the dishwasher. Exercise care when removing the dishwasher from its space as the dishwasher legs can easily damage the floor.
It is usually not necessary to replace the dishwasher terminal box. The electrical wiring, however, sometimes requires replacement. Wires that are brittle or burned should be replaced. When wires are tied together they should be secured by wire nuts. NOTE: It is not recommended that electrical wires be tied together with electrical tape. The tape can melt from extreme heat and be responsible for the dishwasher to not operate properly.
It is not recommended that the home repairman attempt to replace a known defective circuit breaker or fuse. For additional information, refer to “Dishwasher Stops In Cycle” section in this chapter.
To replace broken or burned wires, refer to “Dishwasher Does Not Fill With Water” section in this chapter.
To replace door switch, refer to “Dishwasher Does Not Fill With Water” section in this chapter.
Turn the electricity OFF at the circuit breaker panel. Remove timer knob, dial, end caps, console screws, and console. Refer to “Dishwasher Won’t Pump Out Water” section of this chapter for the removal of these components. Remove the screws that secure the switch to cabinet. Remove the wiring harness wires from the switch and remove switch.
Install the replacement selector switch by mounting in the same position as the faulty selector switch that was removed.
