Specific failure symptoms include: 1) The dishwasher won’t complete the dishwasher cycle. 2) The dishwasher has a burning smell during the cycle.
Check the dishwasher wiring for a possible loose connection where it connects to the house wiring.
Check for a circuit breaker in the circuit breaker panel that is defective.
Check the dishwasher timer assembly for erratic operation. If the dishwasher suddenly started when the timer dial is pushed to the ON-OFF position, the timer assembly ON-OFF contacts are defective internally. You will have to replace the timer assembly in order for the dishwasher to program through the cycle properly.
The timer switch contacts that supplies voltage to the drive motor are checked in the same manner as the automatic washer.
With the electricity turned ON and the timer assembly pushed in or pulled out, to ON, slowly move the timer dial in a clockwise direction. If the dishwasher starts to run, but after a period of five to fifteen seconds or up to an hour, starts to smoke in the area of the drive motor, the drive motor is damaged internally. To restore the dishwasher to proper operation, the drive motor would have to be replaced.
A suspected faulty drive motor should be removed from the dishwasher. “To Replace Drive Motor Pump Assembly” in this chapter.
To check the drive motor windings for continuity, refer to “Dishwasher Won’t Pump Out Water” section of this chapter.
Turn the electricity ON at the circuit breaker panel. Select a cycle on the dishwasher timer dial to where the drive motor starts to run. Push in or pull out the timer knob and start the dishwasher. Observe how long the dishwasher runs during the cycle. If it stopped during the cycle and did not come back ON, a defective circuit breaker would have to be suspected. Remove the screws that secure case to circuit breaker panel. NOTE: Some homes have fuse panels instead of circuit breaker panels. Fuses and circuit breakers are discussed in detail in the “Electrical Testing” section of this service guide. With the case removed, check the panel for a breaker (15 amp) that tripped from the ON to OFF position. Reset the circuit breaker to the ON position. Restart the dishwasher and observe how long the drive motor runs during the cycle. If it runs for a few minutes and stops and does not come back ON, you have isolated the problem — a defective circuit breaker. It will have to be replaced in order for the dishwasher to operate properly.
Check for a burning odor in the area of the circuit breaker panel. If an odor is noticed, it must be found and isolated quickly because a circuit breaker that has overheated can be responsible for a major house fire.
Turn the electricity to the dishwasher OFF at the circuit breaker panelbefore servicing the dishwasher. Exercise care when removing the dishwasher from its space because the leveling legs can damage the floor.

It is not recommended that the home repairman undertake the replacement of a suspected defective circuit breaker or fuse when a known failure occurs.
In cases, however, where the home repairman has more than a basic knowledge of electricity, the following procedures must be followed when replacing a defective circuit breaker or fuse:
Turn the electrical power to the circuit breaker or fuse OFF.
Remove one or two wires that are attached to the circuit breaker. Fuses are screwed out in a counter-clockwise direction.
Pull up and snap out the defective circuit breaker.
THE HOME REPAIRMAN SHOULD WORK AROUND ELECTRICITY WITH EXTREME CAUTION. IT CAN BECOME AN INSTANT KILLER.
Install the replacement circuit breaker or fuse by mounting in the same position as the defective circuit breaker or fuse that was removed.
