Downlighters
Downlighters are ceiling fittings of tubular shape alloy containing reflector bulbs or spotlights to produce pools of light on the table and floor against a dark ceiling background. They can be mounted as close- ceiling fittings but there are also versions for sinking flush with the ceiling and some are semi-recessed. The flush version, and to a lesser extent the semi-recessed version require a deep void above the ceiling.
Wall washers
These fittings are also mounted flush with the ceiling but instead of producing pools of light on the horizontal plane, produce them on walls as part of a lighting scheme. Colour lamps and coloured walls produce the required effect.
Wall lights
Wall lights are made in single lamp and in multi-lamp versions and are available as matching accessories to the main lighting fittings.
Wall lights are available with and without integral press-button or cord-operated switches. Those having integral switches are’ chosen where it is desired to be able to switch individual lights on and off as required. These should be master switched by a circuit switch, as must the switchless type.
A range of wall lights from one manufacturer has a novel backplate enabling the fitting to be detached from the fixed back- plate by sliding action. The connection between the circuit wires and the wires of the fitting is by a plug and socket arrangement.
Spotlights
A spotlight, and its associated floodlight is a special lamp or bulb having an internal reflector and mounted on a swivel bracket fitting. The fitting housing the lampholder is in various styles and colours to match the decor or to provide a pleasing effect. The lamps are made in various wattages and colours.
Sealed beam spotlights and floodlights, termed PAR 38 lamps, are intended principally for outdoor use in waterproof lampholders. These allow immersion in the garden pool but they are also being used increasingly inside the home either as supplementary or as main lighting for a room and also for discos.

Porch light fittings
The lighting fitting for the porch can be a close mounted ceiling fitting, a pendant fitting or a wall mounted light.
Close mounted fittings are mainly enclosed diffuser fittings which can also be mounted on the wall. Pendant fittings are chiefly lanterns suspended by a chain but there are many styles of pendant which can be installed in the porch where not exposed to the rain.
Wall lights are also available in lantern form; a popular unit being an imitation coach lamp.
Front porch fittings are available bearing the number or name of the house in various styles of letters or figures.
Weatherproof fittings
Outside lighting fittings exposed to rain and snow are of weatherproof construction. These are mainly bulkhead fittings or totally enclosed fittings mounted on brackets including angle brackets for corner mounting.
