Rise and fall Lighting pendants

Of more unusual interest is a rise and fall pendant enabling the height of the light, suspended by the -sheathed flex, to be adjusted as required. One application is in the dining room over the dining table. As the light unit is raised the flex winds into the rise and fall unit in the ceiling plate. Matching fixed-height pendants are also available. The rise and fall principle is a development of the old rise and fall pendant operated with a system of pulleys and ballast weights.

Accent lights

This is a term applied to a range of low- level long-flex single-light pendant fittings in various colours containing a reflector lamp. These produce pools of light to put a fresh accent on coffee tables and on individual room features. They are available in a fixed version as well as the rise and fall version, with matching wall light versions.

Multi-light pendants

The main choice here covers 2- 3- and 4-light fittings as well as fittings having large numbers of small powered lamps including candle lamps. Conventional bulbs burn in the ‘cap-up’ or the ‘cap-down’ position and some have both ‘cap-up’ and ‘cap-down’ burning bulbs.

Lighting Switch control

Any multi-light fitting can be switched by more than one switch. This means that when choosing a multi-light pendant you are not committed to having all bulbs in use when you switch on the light.

Close-mounted Lighting ceiling fittings

A close-mounted ceiling fitting is necessary in situations where restricted headroom does not permit a pendant. It is also fitted in the bathroom where a flexible cord is not approved and it must not be possible for a person using the bath to be able to touch a lighting fitting.

Batten Lighting lampholder

The batten lampholder is the simplest and cheapest close-mounted fitting. It can be used with or without a shade, but in bathrooms or W.C.s and similar situations, the lampholder should be fitted with a deep HO (Home Office) pattern skirt. This prevents a person changing a bulb making contact with the metal lamp cap while the lamp is in contact with the lampholder pins. In addition to the straight batten lampholder, there are angle lampholders for fixing in situations with very little headroom or where the lamp projection is to be at a minimum. More recent developments are a swivel batten lampholder and an adjustable angle lampholder.

Enclosed Lighting fittings

Totally-enclosed close-ceiling fittings have either a glass or a plastic light diffuser and are intended mainly for bathrooms, kitchens and similar situations including a weatherproof version for fixing out of doors. There is also a decorative range for living rooms including a range having crystal glass diffusers and also circular fluorescent fittings with the circular tube enclosed in attractive diffusers of various patterns and colours.

Some circular fluorescent fittings have an external tube with the diffuser inside the circle and mounted flush with the tube.
