Electrical Appliance Not Always Electric, Small Appliance is a BIG Business

There are some things you can do to prolong the life of your appliances and save endless hours of frustration, burning toast, getting marks on your favourite white shirt and taking melted ice-cream out of the freezer. As with many other things in life, appliances need looking after. Do this well and they will serve you faithfully.

Washing-machine Issues

There are too many brands of washing machines available to mention, old and new, but they all have two basic requirements to operate: they need water and they need power. This is one of those appliances where the manual comes in very handy.

For most washing machines you will in all likelihood need a qualified technician to fix it if there is a serious problem. If your washing machine is under warranty, the warranty conditions may include that you keep your grubby paws to yourself when something goes wrong. The latest models have complicated computerized programming and should also not be fiddled with by anyone approaching the status of general ignoramus. But there are some very basic, straight-forward things you should be able to sort out before calling in the heavy guns and standing there red-faced while a top-dollar-an-hour technician reshuffles your load, for instance. Let’s look at some of them:

Excessive vibration

The washing machine is probably standing on uneven ground. Adjust the leveling legs so that the weight is distributed evenly. If it only happens every now and then it could be that the load is unevenly distributed. If you have a top loader, simply open it and shuffle the items, if you have a front loading machine, live with it and do a better job filling it next time. Your load may also be too heavy — don’t stuff more washing into the machine than what is specified as a maximum load.

Fluff on everything

You probably haven’t cleaned the filters for quite some time. People who own animals often experience this. Depending on the type of washing machine, the filter could be anywhere, but it should be fairly easy to spot. It will be located in an area that is easy to reach, as the filter should be cleaned regularly (once-a-week regularly). Remove the filter when the washing machine is empty. Don’t open the filter when the machine is running, in fact, if it is full of water and stopped running, for some unknown reason, it’s a pretty good way to drain the water — have several buckets, mops and towels handy! Follow this by a general cleaning.

No longer white, no longer bright?

It cleans your dirty clothes and heavens only know what else, so it’s only natural to assume that somewhere along the way some of this dirt will clog its arteries and affect its general functioning. Most washing machines are fitted with two filters; one on the water inlet pipe and another that filters the water during the washing process. Clean both of these filters and remember to close the water supply when doing so. Close the machine without any washing and set it on the warmest wash possible. Use a strong detergent, like Biotex, as you would during a normal load, and let it complete the full cycle. Clean the filter again.

Water problems

If the washing machine is taking too long to fill up or the washing is still wet after it has completed the spinning cycle, the water may not be flowing in or out as it should. Check the inlet hose first. Clean all the filters as explained. Inspect the outlet; it is quite possible that deposits have collected over time and have clogged the pipe. Rinse it thoroughly or replace if necessary.
