Heater

The heater elementis located in the tub cavity. It serves two functions during the dishwasher cycle: 1) The heat generated by the high-wattage element heats the water to a temperature of 140 degrees F. The water in the dishwasher tub has to be kept at this temperature or higher, so the hot water can dissolve the detergent. The dishes are thereby assured of being clean when they are removed from the dishwasher. 2) The element generates heat after the water is removed from the dishwasher. This heat helps dry the excess water that has accumulated on the dishes during the wash cycle.

Filter Guard

The filter guardis located in the tub cavity. It is a protective device to assure that large objects and foreign matter do not pass through the dishwasher pump assembly. If this debris were to enter the pump, the internal components could be damaged.

Filter Screen

The filter screenis located in the tub cavity. As water sprays around the tub in a circular motion, it falls onto the dishes. Debris and scraps of food then settle on top of the filter screen. The food is thereby trapped in the screen and has no way of being sprayed back onto the clean dishes.

Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valveis located at the bottom of the dishwasher. Water enters the dishwasher tub cavity through the water inlet valve. When a cycle is selected and the timer knob is turned ON, electricity energizes the solenoid valve coil that controls the supply of water entering the dishwasher.

Spray Arm

The spray armis located in the tub cavity. Water passes through the jets of the spray arm as the drive motor is running. Water pressure through the spray arm jets creates a circular motion that sprays hot soapy water onto the dishes to clean them.

Overfill Switch

The overfill switchis a microswitch that is operated by a float and is located in the tub cavity.

If water entering the dishwasher were not cutoff by the timer, the overfill switch would break a circuit causing the water supply to cutoff.

Dishwasher Rack

The dishwasher rackis located inside the dishwasher tub cavity. Dirty dishes are placed in the rack so that they can be washed.

Starting Relay

The starting relay is usually located inside the control console. The starting relayis an electromechanical device that is used to start the dishwasher drive motor. As electricity flows, the relay energizes the start winding of the drive motor until the motor is almost up to speed. The relay then breaks the electrical circuit to the start winding and the dishwasher drive motor continues to operate on its RUN (or motor) winding. It follows the same procedure when the drive motor reverses direction.

Pump Assembly

The pump assembly is connected directly to the motor. It is driven by the dishwasher drive motor. Internally housed in the pump assembly are two impellers. As the drive motor runs, one impeller (wash) turns in one direction, pumping water to the spray arm. The drive motor then reverses direction, which causes the other impeller (drain) to spin in the other direction, and wash water is pumped from the dishwasher.

Drive Motor

The drive motoris located under the tub cavity. The dishwasher drive motor drives the wash impeller in one direction while washing the dishes. The motor then reverses direction as the drain impeller pumps out the wash water.
