The automatic dishwasher starts the cycle once the homeowner has placed the dishes in the dishwasher and the timer is pushed in or pulled out to ON. With the unit ON, electricity flows through the timer contacts to the water inlet valve solenoid. As the solenoid opens, hot water flows through the inlet valve, the inlet hose, and then into the dishwasher tub cavity.
With the dishwasher running, hot water is sprayed through the lower spray arm to the upper spray arm (if used) by the drive motor that is attached to the pump assembly. As the spray arm revolves, the water pressure sprays hot, soapy water onto the dishes. This spraying pattern is continual as long as there is water in the tub cavity and the drive motor is running. When the timer advances to the end of wash or rinse cycle, the dishwasher drive motor stops running. After a brief pause, the drive motor reverses in direction. The wash water is now removed from the tub cavity by the pump assembly, which pumps the water out of the dishwasher and down the drain.
The heater element is energized through the timer assembly. It is ON during the dishwasher cycle. This high-wattage heater dries the excess water that has collected on the dishes during the wash cycle. When the timer has advanced to the end of cycle, or when the unit reaches OFF, it is safe to open the dishwasher door and remove the clean dishes.
The timer assemblyis located in the control console area at the front of the dishwasher. It controls the sequence during the dishwasher cycle. The assembly consists of a small electrical motor that drives a pinion gear, meshed with a drive gear in the timer assembly. This assembly consists of the cam wheels that rotate slowly, causing the cam to make contact with switch levers which, in turn, “opens” and “closes” electrical circuits to perform the various functions of the automatic dishwasher.
The timer knob is located on the control console. It is attached to the timer assembly and is used for selecting a cycle.
The timer dialis also located on the control console. It is attached to the timer assembly and has a pointer showing the cycle that has been selected.
The selector switch is located in the control console area at the front of the dishwasher. The selector switch is pushed in or pushed out to select different types of washes: for example, a long wash or a short wash. The switch is also used to select whether the dishes are to be dried by the heating element or air dried.
The door switch is located in the control area at the front of the dishwasher. The switch is a protective device that stops the dishwasher drive motor when the door is opened.
The detergent dispenseris located inside the dishwasher door. The detergent is placed in the dispenser compartment. The door is held closed by a catch or magnet. It opens during the dishwasher cycle and releases the detergent into the tub cavity.
