Dishwashers Won’t Pump out Water, Appliance Repair and Replace Procedures


Turn OFF the electricity at the circuit breaker panelbefore servicing the dishwasher. Exercise care when moving the dishwasher from its space. The leveling legs can easily damage the floor.

Replace Appliance Dishwashers: Drive Motor Pump Assembly

Turn OFF the electricity at the circuit breaker panel. Remove the screws that secure the lower panel to the dishwasher cabinet. Disconnect the drive motor connector from the harness wiring. Remove the hose clamp from drain hose that is secured to drive motor base coupling. Remove drain hose from coupling. NOTE: When removing drain hose, place a small pan or towel under the motor base coupling. It is possible that when hose is removed water could spill onto the floor.

Next, move the motor pump supports inside the pump base. Open the dishwasher door. Remove the nozzle cap that secures the lower spray arm to the pump assembly. Remove the spray arm from the pump assembly housing. Locate the filter guard and remove by pressing inward on the two sides. Remove the filter screen by pulling upward. Pull upward to remove the motor and pump assembly.

Appliances RenovationNOTE: In the above discussion, the pump assembly was not secured to the tub cavity with screws or bolts. In some dishwashers, however, the pump assembly may be attached to the tub cavity using clips or screws to avoid water leaks.

When servicing the dishwasher pump assembly internal components, it is necessary to disassemble the pump assembly. The following discussion describes the removal and installation of the wash and drain impellers of a typical dishwasher pump assembly. Note: An impeller that has been damaged by glass or other debris will not perform the job as well as when it was new. A damaged drain impeller will cause the wash water to: 1) Pump out very slowly. 2) No water will be pumped out of the dishwasher tub cavity.

Replace Appliance Dishwashers Wash Impeller

To remove the impeller, the pump assembly top housing will have to be removed. Remove the housing key way and turn the housing in a counter-clockwise direction and remove. Using a screwdriver, straighten out the impeller screw lock. Remove the screw that secures the wash impeller to the pump housing and remove wash impeller. Using a screwdriver, remove the screws that secures cover plate to base assembly and remove cover plate.

Replace Appliance Dishwashers Drain Impeller

To remove the impeller, follow the procedures above for the wash impeller. After removal of the cover plate, remove the shim that is attached to top of drain impeller (it has to be reinstalled in the same position after new impeller part replacement). Using two screwdrivers remove the impeller by pulling off the motor shaft in an upward direction.

Install the above replacement impeller parts by mounting in the same place and position as the faulty impeller parts that were removed. Follow closely the installation steps that are provided in the replacement part impeller kits. If no installation steps are provided in the replacement part impeller kits, reverse the above steps.

Replace ApplianceTimer Assembly

Turn OFF the electricity at the circuit breaker panel. Remove the timer knob by turning counterclockwise. Grasp the edges of the timer dial and pull forward off the timer shaft.

NOTE: When reinstalling dial, it is important to position the dial on the flat spot of the timer shaft. If not installed properly, the dishwasher will not program properly during the cycle.

Using a screwdriver, remove the two end caps that secure the console panel to the dishwasher cabinet. Remove the screws at the top and bottom that secure the console panel to the cabinet and remove console panel. Using a screwdriver, remove the screws that secure the timer assembly to door frame. With screws removed, pull the timer forward, remove wiring harness from timer connectorand remove timer assembly.

Install the replacement timer assembly by mounting in the same position as the defective timer assembly that was removed. Follow instructions provided in the replacement timer assembly kit. If no installation steps or procedures are available, reverse the above steps.

Replace Appliance Drive Motor & Motor Relay

Turn OFF electricity at circuit breaker panel. Refer to Repair Procedures under the “Dishwasher Won’t Pump Out Water” section of this for removal of timer, knob, dial, and console assembly. Next, remove screws that secure motor relay to dishwasher cabinet. Remove wires to relay terminals and remove relay.
