Electrical Fused Clock Connectors

A fused clock connector is a small non- switched fused outlet designed expressly for supplying a mains electric clock.

The unit is in two sections: a fixed base which is connected to the fixed circuit wiring, and another section in.the form of a flat pin plug which plugs into sockets in the base. The plug section carries the flex of the clock and contains the fuse. The plug is secured in the base by a retaining screw. This prevents the plug being pulled out accidentally and stopping the clock.

Fused clock connectors are sometimes used for other appliances, such as extractor fans.

Shaver supply units and shaver sockets

The shaver supply unit is designed especially for shavers used in the bathroom. It has a 2-pin socket which accepts British, Continental and American standard 2-pin round and flat pin plugs.

The unit contains a transformer to isolate the socket from the earthed mains supply to provide greater safety in the bathroom. The voltage at the socket is 240 V, but a dual version provides an alternative voltage of 110 V for American shavers.

A thermal cut-out in the unit prevents any mains voltage portable appliance (or portable lamp) other than a shaver being plugged into the unit and used in the bathroom.

A shaver socket is a socket which accepts the 2-pin plugs of shavers but does not contain a transformer. It is therefore cheaper and may be installed in any room except a bathroom. Some models are fitted with thermal cut-out.

Some striplights intended for shaving mirror lighting are fitted with a shaver socket. Some have an isolating transformer and may be installed in the bathroom. Others are simply shaver sockets with no transformer. These may be installed anywhere except in the bathroom.

Cord outlet units

A cord outlet is simply a moulded plastic ’square’ plate containing three terminals and a cord grip behind the plate and a flexible cord entry hole in the centre. It is mounted on the standard flush or surface socket outlet box.

The function of the unit is to provide a connection of an appliance to the circuit wiring other than by socket-outlet or fused connection unit. It is installed in situations, such as in a bathroom, to connect the flex of towel rails and other heaters where the switched outlet must be out of reach of a person using the bathroom. In these situations the switch is usually a cord-operated ceiling switch.

Socket multi-adaptors

These are also known as plug adaptors. They are inserted into socket-outlets to enable more than one plug to be used from any one socket-outlet. The two outlet 13 A unit is commonplace, since it enables an extra plug to be used from a 13 A socket- outlet.

Other versions have mixed ratings for 5 A and 2 A plugs; the adaptor in these containing a fuse to protect the smaller outlets. Some makes have no fuse, although designed for plugs of various current ratings. These adaptors are unauthorised and should not be used in the home. Also available are shaver socket adaptors enabling a shaver to be used from a 13 A socket-outlet.

Outdoor wiring accessories

Socket-outlets, switches and other wiring accessories exposed to rain and snow outside the house must be weatherproof. These are either metalclad or are unbreakable types in plastic or rubber. Accessories which are installed outside, but under cover, can be of the plastic-moulded type.

Accessories installed in the garage, garden shed or greenhouse are normally of the plastic-moulded type.

Consumer units and switchgear

As previously explained these replace the old-fashioned main switch and fuse units and have also largely replaced the fuseboard with its separate main switch and fuse unit.
