Electrical Appliance Not Always Electric, Small Appliance is a BIG Business

Gas Clothes Dryer and Electronic Dryer, Household Appliance Clothes Dryer how it Works

Clothes dryers accomplish their task by furnishing heated air in large volumes to the interior of a rotating drum where the clothes are tumbled and tossed while being exposed to the passing air. For the clothes dryer to work, the machine needs a source of heat, tumbling capability, large volumes of fresh air, and the ability to remove large amounts of moisture-laden air from the interior of the dryer cabinet.

Air that is drawn from inside the house enters the dryer cabinet through vents that are in front and back of the dryer. A blower system then forces the air through ducting where the air is heated and then funnelled into the rotating drum of the dryer. Air circulates throughout the drum and eventually passes through the tumbling clothes. Air in the interior drum eventually is saturated with moisture from the clothes. The dryer blower system then forces the moisture- laden air out of the dryer through a vent located outside the dryer cabinet.

GAS DRYERS

The gas dryer differs from the electric dryer only by the energy source used to heat the air. A gas dryer is more complicated than an electric dryer because of the pilot flame, and the ON-andOFF cycling of the gas flow to the main burner. Components of a typical gas dryer are described below.

Dryer Power Cord

The gas dryer power cord is a three-pronged type in which the third prong represents cabinet ground. Most appliance manufacturers include in the dryer installation kit a ground wire or harness for attaching to the nearest ground, such as a cold-water pipe. Wiring codes differ from location to location as to whether adapters for wall outlets or receptacles may be used with the alternate ground wire.

Motor

Gas dryer drive motors are usually rated from 1/4 to 1/3 horsepower. Gas dryers require only household electricity, which is 110-125 volts for dryer operation. The dryer drive motor is a double-shaft type. One end has a pulley that attaches to a drive belt to rotate the dryer drum. The other end attaches to the blower wheel.

Timer

The timer assembly consists of a small motor that drives a pinion gear that meshes with a drive gear. The timer assembly contains cam wheels that raise and lower switch levers, which in turn open and close circuits to the drive motor and heating component.

Thermocouple

When a gas dryer pilot burner is lighted, the metal in the thermocouple bulb creates a current. This current is measured in milliamps. This current is strong enough to open a plunger, which is made of a lightweight material. You must, however, press a button (usually red) to hold open the plunger against the resistance of a spring until the thermocouple warms up (approximately 15-30 seconds). The current generated by the thermocouple is then sufficient to hold open the gas solenoid in order for the main burner to come on.

Glow Coil Ignitor

Some gas dryers use a glow coil as an igniter. A 24-volt transformer supplies current to another small transformer, which causes the glow coil to heat up. Electrical current causes heat from the wire of the glow coil to ignite gas coming from the pilot burner. Once the gas is ignited, the gas flame heats a bi-metal strip which causes current to be broken or cut OFF to the glow coil.

Gas Pressure Regulator

These devices regulate the “escape” pressure of the gas entering the dryer. Adjustments on this component are set at the factory. If an adjustment is necessary, you should call a qualified technician.
