Electrical Appliance Not Always Electric, Small Appliance is a BIG Business

Check Drive Motor Windings

The drive motor start and run windings can be checked with a volt/ohmmeter. Set the volt! ohmmeter on the RX-1 scale and place one probe on the white lead of the drive motor terminal block, the remaining probe is placed on the blue lead of the drive motor terminal block. The volt/ohmmeter should show continuity (or approximately four ohms resistance) if the motor winding is good. No continuity would suggest an open or burned-out winding. If the drive motor has a humming sound when the motor tries to start, the start switch must be checked.

Check Drive Motor Start Switch

The drive motor start switch is a component that supplies the required voltage to the drive motor start and run windings as the motor is started. As the motor reaches operating speed, the start switch drops out of the circuit. A continuity check will quickly determine if the start switch is OK. With the volt/ohmmeter set on the RX-1 scale, place one lead on the terminal that supplies line voltage to the drive motor. The remaining lead is connected to terminal 6 or 7. With the start button depressed, the volt/ohmmeter should show continuity (or 0 ohms). If the meter shows no deflection, or partial meter movement, this would be an indication that the start switch is faulty and it will have to be replaced.

Check Wiring

If the above checks have not isolated the problem, visually check the washer console for burned electrical wires or terminals that could have worked loose. You should also check the washer console for loose connections in the wiring connector block. This check is to determine if any wires that connect to the timer have burned or jarred loose, causing a faulty connection.

You should make a final check of the electrical wiring harness that is attached to the washer drive motor connector terminals. Often during washer operation, the vibration of the washer during agitation and spin cycles will cause wires to work loose. This condition will cause faulty electrical contact and, in some cases, the drive motor wires will become burned or broken.

Repair Procedures

Unplug the washer power cord before servicing the automatic washer. Exercise care when moving the washer from its original position, or the washer legs might damage the floor.

To Replace Washer Drive Motor

Move the washer out from the wash station and tilt against the wash station wall or lay washer on its side. Remove lower back panel and using standard hand tools, sockets or ratchet, remove the bolts and braces that secure the drive motor to the washer chassis. Remove motor wires from the motor and remove the drive motor. After removing the drive motor, remove the belt pulley from the shaft as the pulley is to be reinstalled on the replacement drive motor. WARNING: The drive motor is extremely bulky and heavy. To avoid personal injury, handle the drive motor with care.

When removing the motor pulley from the defective drive motor, mark the position on the motor shaft for alignment of the motor pulley on the replacement drive motor. The motor pulley must be aligned on the replacement part drive motor in the same position as it was on the faulty part. Improper alignment can cause premature wear of the washer drive belt.

Install the replacement part drive motor by mounting in the same position as the faulty drive motor that was removed. Follow closely the installation steps and instructions that are provided in the replacement drive motor kit.

NOTE: The wiring sequence of the replacement motor will vary from one motor manufacturer to another. Failure to wire the drive motor properly will result in no agitating or spinning, or erratic operation.
