Electrical Appliance Not Always Electric, Small Appliance is a BIG Business

Why my Electric Washer (Washing Machine) Stops in Cycle, what is wrong and how to fix it?

Specific failure symptoms include: 1) The washer won’t complete the wash or spin cycle. 2) The washer has a burning smell during the wash and spin cycle. 3) The washer leaves water in the tub at the end of the cycle.

Check the washer power cord for a possible loose connection at the wall plug receptacle.

Check to see if the wall receptacle is defective or has burned or oxidized contacts. If so, the repair should be made by a licensed electrician.

Check Timer Assembly

Check the washer timer assembly for erratic operation. If the washer suddenly starts when the timer dial is pushed to the OFF position, the timer assembly ON-OFF contacts are defective internally and you will have to replace it. Also, with the washer timer assembly pushed or pulled out to off, slowly turn the washer timer dial clockwise. If the washer starts a cycle, the timer assembly is faulty and you will have to replace it.

The timer switch contact that supplies voltage to the washer drive motor can easily be checked with the volt/ohmmeter. With the dial set on the RX-1 scale of the volt/ohmmeter, place one probe of the volt/ohmmeter on one terminal of the timer and the other probe on the terminal that supplies voltage to the drive motor. With timer ON, there should be continuity (0 ohms resistance) on the volt/ohmmeter. If switch continuity is not indicated, the washer timer assembly must be replaced to restore the washer to proper operating order.

Check Washer Drive Motor

With the washer timer assembly pushed in or pulled out, to ON, slowly move the timer dial in a clockwise direction. If the washer runs, but after a period of five to fifteen seconds starts to smoke, very probably there is internal damage to the motor. To restore the washer to working order, you would have to replace the drive motor. NOTE: Washer drive motors have an internally-mounted overload protective device. These devices are sensitive to heat and will electrically break the circuit to the drive motor when the motor is subject to extreme high temperatures.

Before assuming that the washer drive motor is faulty, the motor can easily be checked using an electrical test cord. Unplug the washer power cord and remove the lower back panel from washer. Locate the drive motor on either the left-hand or right-hand side of the washer. Next, tilt washer against wall or lay on its side and remove the motor wires and note the sequence in which they were removed, because they are to be reinstalled on the same terminals as they were removed. Locate connector “W” (white) on connector block and attach one lead of the test cord. The remaining lead should be attached to another terminal of the terminal block. With the test cord plugged in a 110-volt receptacle, the drive motor should start to run. Leave the motor running for a period of about ten minutes. Check the motor for excessive heat or smoke. If the drive motor runs with no problems, then it can be assumed that the drive motor is in good condition.

If, during the above check the drive motor has a humming sound while the motor tries to start, the drive motor start switch could possibly be the problem.

Check Drive Motor Capacitor

Some large - capacity automatic washers require the use of a starting capacitor so that the drive motor may start smoothly.
