Check Washer Drive Belt

A final condition that could cause weak pump-out is a loose drive belt that doesn’t rotate the water pump. A sure and quick check that involves no hand tools is to turn the timer knob to a cycle where there is a motor function such as spin or agitate. With the timer dial on spin cycle, the washer should begin to spin the clothes. If you hear the sound of the motor running, but the washer tub is not moving or attempting to spin the clothes, then it can be assumed that the washer drive belt is slipping on the drive motor pulley or the belt is broken.

To check the physical appearance of a washer drive belt, unplug the washer power cord and remove the back from washer. Using a drop light or flashlight, check the drive belt tension by manually turning the drive belt in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. If the belt has stretched or lost its tension, it could probably be tightened to restore the washer to proper operating order. On the other hand, if the drive belt has burned spots in the webbing or if the belt is broken, the cause is usually a mechanical problem in the washer. A defective clutch assembly, broken teeth on gears of gearcase, and frozen shafts of water pumps can cause this problem. The problem would have to be repaired in order to restore the washer to proper operating order.

REPAIR PROCEDURES

Unplug the washer power cord before servicing the automatic washer. Exercise care when moving the washer from its original position because the washer legs can damage the floor.

To Replace Self-Cleaning Filter

To remove a faulty self-cleaning filter, remove water, tilt the washer against the wall or lay on its side. Then locate the filter. Using hand tools, remove the hose clamps that are attached to the defective filter. Next, remove the tub outlet hose that is secured to the filter assembly.

Using standard handtools, remove the nuts that secure the filter to the washer chassis and remove the filter from the washer. Install the replacement part filter by mounting it in the same position as the defective filter that was removed. Follow the remounting and installation steps provided in the filter replacement part kit. If no installation steps are provided in the replacement part kit, reverse the above steps.

NOTE: When reinstalling the hose clamps on 1 a replacement part filter, do not install the hose clamps in the original grooves or indentions in the hoses. Installing the hose clamps in their original position on the hoses could easily cause a water leak.

To Remove Filter Trap Assembly

To remove a restricted filter trap assembly, remove water, tilt the washer against the wall, or lay on its side. Locate the filter trap assembly and remove the hoses that are attached to the filter from the water pump. Remove the clamp that secures the tub outlet hose to the filter trap assembly and remove the filter trap.

When replacing the filter trap assembly, install the replacement part filter trap assembly by mounting in the same position as the filter trap that was removed. Follow the remounting and installation steps that are provided by the manufacturer. If no installation steps are provided, reverse the above steps.

To Replace Water Pump Assembly

Locate the washer water pump assembly and remove bolts — with standard hand tools — that secure the water pump to the gearcase. You may want to remove the filter assembly first to make it easier to remove the pump. Remove the tub hoses that are attached to the water pump by using hose clamp pliers, then remove water pump.

Install the replacement water pump by mounting it in the same position as the faulty water pump that was removed. NOTE: When reinstalling the hose clamps on a replacement water pump, do not reinstall the hose clamps on hoses in the original position as removed as a leak could result. Follow the installation steps that are provided in the replacement water pump kit. If no installation steps are provided, reverse the above steps.

To Replace Washer Drive Belt

Using hand tools, remove the screws that secure the washer back panel. Loosen the nut holding the motor bracket and slide the drive motor toward the gearcase. This relieves belt tension, which will make replacement of the drive belt easier. Next, remove all the braces that are secured to the washer cabinet. Remove the mounting bolts that attach the water pump to the gearcase. Rotate the gearcase drive pulley until the spin cam bar is at its lowest point of travel.

Remove the gearcase clutch spring, and with hand tools remove the gearcase mounting bolt that has a spacer attached. Use socket drive to loosen the remaining mounting bolts a minimum of six turns. Next, position replacement drive belt over gearcasae. This enables the washer gearcase to drop down so that the part replacement drive belt can be slipped between the yoke and the basket drive pulley. If the faulty drive belt is still attached to the washer gearcase, note how the drive belt is routed around the gearcase drive pulley, water pump, and basket drive pulley. Install the replacement drive belt in the same sequence as the faulty drive belt that was removed. Now, reverse the disassembly steps to reassemble the washer. NOTE: After installation of the replacement drive belt, be sure the belt tension is not
