Wiring Remote Socket Outlets

Socket-outlets situated off the main route of the cable do not have to be connected to the actual ring cable. Instead they are usually supplied from spur cables branching off the ring. These spurs are wired in the same size cable as that used for the ring.

Connecting fixed appliances

Fixed appliances which may be connected to a ring circuit include skirting heaters, wall heaters, small water heaters and any non-portable electrical appliances having individual loadings of not more than 3000 W(13 A approx.). Read the rest of this entry »

Radial Power Circuits

A radial power circuit is the name given to a circuit supplying a number of 13 A socket-outlets and fixed appliances using one cable which is not wired in the form of a ring but terminates at the last outlet.

The permitted number of socket-outlets (and fixed appliances) depends on the current rating of the circuit which can be either 20 A, wired in 2.5 mm2 cable, or 30 A wired in 4 mm2 cable. The number of socket-outlets and fixed appliances which can be served by a 20 A radial circuit depends also on the location of the circuit and whether the outlets are confined to one room. Circuit for Electric Cookers

Small table cookers and other portable appliances having individual loadings not in excess of 3 kW are run off 13 A fused plugs and socket-outlets. They require no special wiring though extra socket-outlets may be needed in the kitchen when additional electrical cooking appliances are bought. These additional socket-outlets may be served from the ring circuit and spurs.

Survive your Electrical Encounter while doing a Repair

If an appliance needs inspection, unplug it from the socket. No, don’t just turn off the switch — there may still be some current flowing.

When working on switches, sockets or, simply said, things that cannot be removed from the energy source, switch off the power at the main switch on the electrical switch board. To be on the even safer side, always wear rubber-soled shoes (only during the repair); it will reduce the shock should all your safety precautions fail (turning you into a fruitcake as opposed to a full-blown vegetable). Off-peak Operation

Where the white meter tariff is in operation it can be an advantage to heat the full contents of a tank overnight when the cheaper rate for electricity is in force and switch on the short element wizen additional hot water is needed.

This normally requires two circuits for the immersion heater installation. One circuit is used for the night rate supply, when time controlled in conjunction with night storage heaters, this supplying the long element of a dual immersion heater or the lower immersion heater of a two- immersion heater arrangement. Electric Water Heaters

Electric heating of water can be carried out in a variety of ways. These include small capacity heaters fitted above the sink, instantaneous sink heaters or immersion heaters in the hot water tank.

Small Storage Water Heaters

Small storage water heaters fitted over the sink or washbasin having capacities of up to about 3 gallons and electrical loadings of 1 to 3 kW are usually supplied from the ring circuit by means of a spur. Storage Heater Circuits

Storage heaters require a separate circuit for each heater. This is because, unlike direct acting heaters which are switched on and off as required, storage heaters are all switched on together during the 8-hour period. Circuit Wiring Joint boxes, Consumer Electronics Home Guide

Joint boxes are usually circular and for part of the circuit wiring. They are fix permanently to the house structure are used principally in lighting circuits. Join boxes are available in 4- 5- and 6-terminal versions.

Dishwashers Won’t Pump out Water, Appliance Repair and Replace Procedures


Turn OFF the electricity at the circuit breaker panelbefore servicing the dishwasher. Exercise care when moving the dishwasher from its space. The leveling legs can easily damage the floor.

Replace Appliance Dishwashers: Drive Motor Pump Assembly

Turn OFF the electricity at the circuit breaker panel. Remove the screws that secure the lower panel to the dishwasher cabinet. Disconnect the drive motor connector from the harness wiring. Remove the hose clamp from drain hose that is secured to drive motor base coupling. Remove drain hose from coupling. NOTE: When removing drain hose, place a small pan or towel under the motor base coupling. It is possible that when hose is removed water could spill onto the floor. Read the rest of this entry »
