Electrical Appliance Not Always Electric, Small Appliance is a BIG Business

How to name Refrigerator Appliance Components and Diagnose Problems

The components of a typical household refrigerator are described below:

Compressor

The heart of the refrigerator system is the compressor. It is made up of a pump and an electric motor and is contained in a sealed dome through which the refrigerant travels.

Starting Relay

The starting relayis an electromechanical switch used to start the compressor motor. As electricity flows, the starting relay energizes the start winding of the refrigerator compressor motor until the motor is almost up to speed. At this point, the relay breaks the electrical circuit to the start winding and the compressor motor continues to run on its run (or motor) winding. Read the rest of this entry »

Fridge does not run, Interior Light Comes on (Repair Procedures)

Unplug the Fridge power cord before servicing the Fridge. Move the Fridge out from the wall. Use extreme care when moving the Fridge, because the Fridge legs can easily damage the floor.

To Replace Defrost Timer

Open the Fridge door and locate the control console in the back of the Fridge cabinet. Remove the screws that secure the console cover. Remove the thermostat bracket. NOTE: Before removing the defrost timer from the Fridge cabinet, mark the wires, so they can be replaced correctly on the replacement part. Next, remove the screws that secure the defrost timer to the Fridge cabinet. Next, remove wiring harness and remove defrost timer. Read the rest of this entry »

Appliance Cable Wiring Harness

The term ‘harness‘ is used for all of the wires that connect the various components within an appliance. In large appliances they are usually bound or fastened ‘together in bunches to keep the wiring neat and safely anchored. Smaller appliances, however, may sacrifice neatness for safety and route the wiring to avoid contact with heat or sharp edges. The correct positioning of wiring also contributes to the double insulation of an appliance, so no alterations whatsoever should be made to the routing or position of the wiring in double insulated appliances.

When you first take a look at it, the harness may seem like a jumble of wires thrown together, but if you take the time to inspect it, you will find that each wire is colour-coded or numbered either on the wire itself or on the connector at each end. This allows the engineer to follow the wire through the appliance easily. With a little practice, any wiring or coding can be easily followed. Read the rest of this entry »

Variable speed control

Unlike the pre-set speed control, variable control allows a greater variation in motor speeds. The motor is a plain AC series-wound brush motor and consequently it is incapable of any variation in speed on its own.

Speed is governed by a separate speed control unit. This unit consists of a printed circuit board with a number of solid-state components, often called the speed module or motor control module. In simple terms, this device interrupts the power supply to the motor at regular intervals. In effect, it pulses the motor. If the pulsing is increased, the motor will run faster and if pulsing is slowed, the motor will run slower. Read the rest of this entry »

Cylinder cleaners

This type of cleaner, which cleans purely by suction, is better suited to situations other than large carpeted areas: rugs, car interiors, large areas of hard flooring, walls, curtains and furniture. Carpeted stairs are also much easier to vacuum with a cylinder cleaner.

Suction-only carpet cleaning does not remove dirt and grit from the pile base in the same way that the beating and sweeping action of the upright models. However, a machine has been developed that combines the cylinder model with the powered brush roll of the upright vacuum. This type of cylinder appliance has the option of a powered cleaning head attachment that can be connected when required for large carpeted areas. This attachment has a revolving brush roll which is similar to that of the upright cleaner and the suction is supplied by the motor of the cylinder cleaner. Read the rest of this entry »
